Lessons can be selected according to grade band (K–2, 3–5, 6–8, 9–12) and area of literacy practice. Each lesson is research-based, and includes a detailed instructional plan. The lessons are written for the teacher but include student-ready materials such as worksheets, interactives, and reviewed Web resources.

The NLVM is a resource from which teachers may freely draw to enrich their mathematics classrooms through the use of computer-based manipulatives and interactive learning tools that help students visulize relationships and applications.

Students log on to the website and set goals, enter the number of steps they have walked, and view a map of Virginia and their position along the walking route they have selected.
