Wiki Pages: Getting Started - SharePoint Out-of-the-Box

SharePointers for you to consider as you develop your website
with Windows SharePoint Services…
  • Default components of a SharePoint home page are
    • Top Link bar – at first, it just has Home for your home page.  You may want to eventually add other top link connectors to pages for your different subject areas, classes, or other major categories of sites.
    • Quick Launch bar – (left side vertical list) by default, it includes a number of links to folders/pages in your website.  You may want to delete some of these ‘attractive nuisances’ that folks would be inclined to click on (and then be disappointed/confused when there is nothing there).
    • Announcements List – this useful web part is really easy to start with; just say hello to your web visitors, and then add other announcements that may be of use/interest to your patrons.  Simply type in the announcement title, and then add more details in the description.
    • Calendar Event List – this is ideal for homework postings or other specific dated items.  Again, Simply type in the event title, and then add more details in the description.
    • Link List – use this to send your web visitors to other links on your site, links on the school or division pages, or outside links of interest to students or parents.
    • Image Web Part – the default image is the SharePoint logo, but you can easily change it to another online image
    • Shared Documents library – you may place uploaded documents in this library, though you might consider deleting this library, and creating one called “docs” that is a lot easier to type in a web address than “Shared%20Documents” (a space in web language = “%20”)
    • Task List – Yes, this is a “to do” list.
    • Team Discussion – probably not something you want to start out with, but perhaps you might eventually find a need for it
  • Create a “webpics” picture library to house your internal website images, such as small pics or clip art for your website.
  • Create a “pics” picture library to house your class photos.  Consider adding a new folder within the library for each special event.
  • Create a “sites” document library to house website pages that you create in SharePoint
