Course Offerings and Trainers |
Sarah Rowe |
Discussion: DSLCC/Earl Dodrill is willing to work with BCHS to extend course offerings. He is reviewing inventory at DSLCC to determine what trainer equipment is available. Rowe plans to meet with Stephanie Hiner, BCHS guidance counselor, to review programs that enhance CTE completer status. At this time, we have one student who is requesting work release for the 2012-13 school year. This student has agreed to work within our planned ITC program. CTE teachers will monitor students whose ITC area matches closest to the teacher’s credentials. Rowe plans emphasis on avoidance of students choosing to drop CTE courses when the course would make them eligible for CTE completer status. Exploratory classes will include Culinary, Auto, Industrial Maintenance, Carpentry and Business, with a rotation through each area over the course of the school year. Bonnie Lee is interested in providing a presentation table during lunches to give students more information about available CTE classes. Jeff Hicks had a representative from the Nashville Auto Diesel Program speak to his students. Considering the expenses related to trade schools, it is imperative that emphasis be made to all students to complete a FAFSA. FAFSA deadlines prevent students from having financial aid possibilities available if they decide at a later date to attend college or trade schools. |

Credential Testing Update |
Katie Keyser |
Discussion: Sample tests have been ordered, received and distributed to teachers. Sample tests enable the teachers and students to see what will be available on the actual test. Students are also given the opportunity to take a sample test online to give insight into the testing program. Bonnie Lee wanted to offer the Workplace Readiness test to her students. At this time, testing is offered only to students who hold a completer status as the Virginia Department of Education requires that all completers be tested. Final testing will begin in early May. Jeff Hicks asked that Katie Keyser call NOCTI to determine if performance tests could be given to students in place of written/online testing. A request was made for additional Sample Workplace Readiness teacher’s copies. |
Conclusions: Credential testing will only be offered to CTE completers at this time. |
Action items: Call NOCTI to question performance testing for Virginia. Check on availability and pricing of teacher edition samples. |

Community Service/Spotlight on Mertz |
Sarah Rowe |
Discussion: Sarah Rowe and Stephanie Hiner have been meeting to discuss community service possibilities for our students. More emphasis needs to be made to bring the accomplishments of CTE to the public. Rowe suggested that a “spotlight” be provided in The Recorder on a regular basis to highlight the happenings by CTE department. It was also suggested that services such as mower blade sharpening, tire pressure/break checks, etc. be offered to the public as “specials” to give the students an opportunity to demonstrate what they are learning in their CTE classes. All were in agreement of the suggested plans but feel the “service specials” should be tabled until the fall due to time constraints for the remainder of the school year. |
Conclusions: Create schedule for The Recorder “Spotlight” and plan for future “service specials” in the fall. |
Action items: Sarah Rowe will call Mike Bollinger, The Recorder, to set up highlight page. |

Liability for ITC |
Sarah Rowe |
Discussion: At the last meeting there was concern for liability if students are released from school for ITC programs. It has been determined that students would fall under the BCPS liability policy if they leave school to pursue courses that enhance their educational experience as connected to BCHS. Cara Major extended the opportunity for students to take advantage of training sessions available at The Homestead including hospitality, lifeguard training, and CPR. The Homestead provides a presentation table the first Friday of each month during lunches to give student information on job opportunities. |

School Board Report/Funding |
Sarah Rowe |
Discussion: BCHS has not taken advantage of funding offered by the state. There is a need for a CTE Administrator/Coordinator. Upon receipt of the available fund/grant allocation the BCPS school board will decide how funds can be funneled to a CTE Coordinator position. The school board is in agreement that the need for a CTE Coordinator needs to be addressed. New programs have been tabled except for the options available through DSLCC. It was also suggested that focus be made to find businesses willing to invest in our CTE programs. This collaboration would help both the community and our students to grow together. |
