BCPS will join other school divisions, businesses and private citizens in a statewide tornado drill on Tuesday, March 17, at 9:45 am. While there will be minimal disruption in the school routine, this exercise is an important reminder for students and staff regarding safety procedures to follow in extreme weather.
On average, between 15 and 20 tornados strike Virginia each year. Some may only knock down a few trees or otherwise cause minimal damage, but others can effect widespread destruction and human death. While the Alleghany Highlands has experienced fewer tornados than most other areas in the state, many Bath Countians will remember the F2 (113-157 mph winds) tornado that hit Augusta Springs in 1990, damaging most of the structures in that area.
